In 1944, The Citizens of Warsaw, Poland along with the Polish Underground took up what little arms they had (1/15 had weapons) in a planned revolt against their Nazi occupiers which was supposed to have taken one week. It lasted over 60 days.
The Occupiers supposedly were aware and ready and used everything militarily at their disposal to put down the uprising. The Warsaw Citizens had only small arms, and improvised weapons. The Allies tried to assist via air supply and dropped some 200 tons of cargo on the besieged city traveling over 1,600 miles from airbases in Italy. The insurgents used any captured arms and ammunition and it was not uncommon to see an insurgent wearing almost a full German uniform with only the National colors on an armband or Helmet band to distinguish themeselves. The streets were so deadly, that vital communication and goods were moved through the sewer system of the city that was knee deep in sludge, waste and dead bodies. Due to it's narrow confines, the traffic in the kanals was regulated to maintain efficiency and special Guides and Couriers; knowledgeable of the kanal system were assigned to navigate it. My depiction shows two navigating the hazardous maze. Aware they were victims of Politics and Power; The Men, Women & Children took up arms to liberate their city. After a long and brutal struggle, the insurgents capitulated. Over 80 percent of the city was destroyed in the fighting. (More was later demolitioned) and all remaining inhabitants were forced to leave the city. Their Spirit is not forgotten. It's not that I don't like communists. I just don't like them near me.
Interestingly, I did this piece after I was conversing with another Polish Artist here and I absentmindedly commented that her City must have Beautiful, Old architecture.
I immediately realized I had committed a faux pas and she was kind enough not to correct me.
I did the research and this piece as a sort of unsaid contrition to the city of Warsaw, it's People and Her. (to repay her kindness)

I'm just a Modern Warrior
War for all it's excitement, is very sad & very terrible.
Many good people die.
I'm not doubting you, but, how did you know this happened to him?
Did you find any records of his service and of how he died?
